SmFeN magnets, also known as Sm 2 Fe 17 N 3, have been anticipated as a potential choice for the next generation of permanent magnet materials, SmFeN has many advantages, including:

  • Curie temperatures up to 476 degrees Celsius, much higher than conventional sintered Nd magnets.
  • The magnet crystal anisotropy field is three times that of Nd 2 Fe 14 B, offering great potential for high coercivity magnets.
  • SmFeN magnets can be magnetically tuned without the addition of cobalt or other heavy rare earth elements (HREE).

SmFeN magnets were first commercialized by Japanese companies in the field of bonded magnets. The isotropic magnets or anisotropic magnets require a stable raw material SmFeN powder. Both Nichia and Sumitomo used reduction diffusion to obtain anisotropic powders that are well suited for injection molding magnets.
